Cannon Beach Nuttery

Should be a name for a retail shop.

Instead, it's one of those politically correct issues that makes absolutely no sense. Cannon Beach Resolution 11-02 is being offered to the Cannon Beach City Council when its January 4th meeting convenes. What does it do? It offers support to the Oregon Legislature in passing legislation which "bans single-use plastic and paper check-out bags."

Whether I go into the wine shop, or the grocery store, the last thing on my mind is how to negotiate my purchases out the door. The practical matter is, when you buy stuff, you typically need some contrivance to help you negotiate that trip, that allows for a certain degree of central bundling. I think this was the motive force behind the creation of the shopping bag.

Common sense would dictate that governments not try to substitute dumb thinking for common sense. But, I guess that degree of common sense would seem not just redundant to people with important agendas and ideas, but unnecessary. Plastic and paper bags are just so wrong on so many levels; litter, destruction of ancient forests, death-traps for wildlife. Oh, and Global Warming and unsustainable consumption. Silly people, with silly ideas that have been elevated to Profound Caring.
