Sent a letter to the White House tonight.
Blogging is one thing. My business is another. Tonight I share my business. It's a risk that I normally wouldn't take. But things are happening with Al-Qaeda that make my risk-aversion shrink by comparison.
Several events have taken place in the past few months. Not the least of these has been the improvement of our armed forces in Iraq. Then there are those pesky messages from American Al-Qaeda, Addam Ghaddan.
I will include the body of my message to the White House below. The essence of my letter is an inquiry as to how the President would ask us to address the next attack Al-Qaeda is going to commit against us. And, why we don't talk about it in advance.
For those of us in the media, we are aware of the power of what we say. We are not here to create panic. Were that my wish, I could create panic. Other radio stations in this small market have, with irresponsible reporting of "potential" tsunamis. We don't do that. You can talk all you want about arguing with fellas that buy ink in 55 gallon drums. But when it comes to motivation, radio does it.
I'd like your input, too. Should radio stations advise their listeners about the impact of another attack by Al-Qaeda on US soil? There are approximately ten thousand radio stations in the US. About 1-fifth of these are country stations...as is mine.
Read the attachment I sent with my letter. Let me know.
"What would you do if our nation is attacked again?
"Hi, this is station manager XXX XXXXX.
"In the past few weeks, American Adam Gaddahn, known as the American Al-Qaeda, has delivered a message to his fellow countrymen, you and me, from Afghanistan. According to Gaddahn, from KTUU television, Anchorage, “al Qaeda is vowing to keep up the fight”.
"Recently, there have been radiological threats against New York, Miami and Los Angeles attributed to Adam Gaddahn’s messages from Al-Qaeda.
"Again, the question is, what will you do when America is attacked again?
"We haven’t been attacked since nine-eleven. And, for the last six years I think we’ll all agree we’ve been lucky. We’re an open country that believes in open borders and open relationships. And it’s this openness that terrorists are attacking.
"Talking about the attack before it happens will help us deal with it. We’re not used to being attacked. Living in Israel, maybe you’d be used to it.
"Last time, the emotional hit could have cost us more than a trillion dollars in lost business in America and thousands of lost lives. The losses in New York were terrible. But losses occurred in small towns like ours, as well. Businesses that were there in 2001 are gone. Tragic business downturns hurt more than just the direct victims of an attack. Families that relied on small businesses were closed. And are gone.
"Next time, we need to shoulder our responsibilities and make sure the terrorists don’t hurt us that badly again. They can hurt our nation. They can’t kill our nation.
"But, are you prepared for the next attack against our nation?
"A public service message from your locally owned radio station, WZZZ."
